A long-unused iMac 7.1 (specs in images) needs a system refresh for basic online tasks. It currently runs macOS X v10.4.10, seemingly Tiger, but Safari struggles with HTTPS websites. Software Update offers no OS upgrades.
Previously, I installed a fresh SSD, and the system identified it as an EFI boot option, also recognizing a prepared Windows 10 USB drive. However, booting either resulted in frozen screens.
Following online advice, I tried installing Windows 10 on the SSD using another computer. This approach, unfortunately, didn't yield any positive results. Initial research suggested using Bootcamp for Windows 10, but the outdated macOS presents a significant hurdle.
I abandoned the Windows 10 path and focused on macOS upgrades. My research indicated El Capitan as the latest compatible macOS for my iMac 7.1 (https://everymac.com/mac-answers/os...itan-compatible-macs-system-requirements.html). Attempts to upgrade using a DMG file failed, yielding a "couldn't open ___.pkg" error requiring macOS X 10.6. Online sources suggested obtaining original installation media.
Trying Transmac, I created bootable USB drives for both El Capitan and Lion. However, the system doesn't recognize either drive. The original HDD remains functional. This is my first foray into macOS; my goal is simple web browsing using a modern browser like Chrome. Windows 10 would be preferable, but a recent macOS version (like El Capitan or Catalina) is also acceptable. Guidance is needed on how to proceed.
